This guide is for researchers (including humanitarian practitioners) who are seeking guidance on how to promote the participation of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) within the research process. It is based on a qualitative study exploring how humanitarian practitioners and academics operationalise participation in their research with these populations, with a particular focus on experiences conducting research on gender equality and gender-based violence (GBV). It is also informed by a scoping review on refugee and IDP participation, a review of literature on participation in research, and the collective experiences of the authors of this guide.
