Abstract
MTWARA, TANZANIA - Hundreds of volunteers are being trained as part of a research project aiming to improve the survival of new-born babies in a community of more than a million people in Tanzania. Scientists in Mtwara - among them Dr Joanna Schellenberg of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine - are looking at ways of spreading knowledge in the community about new-born care - especially in the first few days of life and also in the months following. Joanna Schellenberg told Peter Goodwin about the factors they are investigating.
