This report seeks to contribute to the understanding of the extent to which different hospital ‘models’
may provide lessons for hospital provision in England. It aims to inform the review led by Sir David
Dalton into how to secure the clinical and financial sustainability of providers of NHS care through
offering new options for organisational forms. It does so by means of an exploratory analysis of the
experiences of four countries: France, Germany, Ireland and the United States, with England included for
comparison.
