What is the best way to measure the success of safe motherhood programmes? The ideal indicators, rates of maternal illness and death, are difficult to measure in the community. Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and John Snow Inc., Indonesia, tested measures of access to obstetric health services as an alternative indicator.
